# A Legacy of Faith, Knowledge and Hope: Celebrating the 55th Birthday of Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini **12 October 2026 | Hassan Sabbah Knowledge & Research Centre (HSKRC)** ## Introduction 12 October 2026 marks the 55th birthday of His Highness Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan V, the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. For Ismaili communities worldwide, the occasion offers an opportunity to extend congratulations and reflect upon the enduring relationship between faith, knowledge, ethical responsibility and service to humanity. ## Life and the Continuity of the Imamat Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini was born on 12 October 1971 in Geneva, Switzerland. He is the eldest son of His Highness Mawlana Shah Karim al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV. Following the passing of Mawlana Shah Karim al-Hussaini on 4 February 2025, Mawlana Shah Rahim succeeded him as the 50th hereditary Imam, in accordance with the Ismaili tradition of designation (nass). Within Ismaili religious understanding, the Imamat represents the continuity of spiritual guidance rooted in Islamic tradition. Its contemporary institutions also reflect a commitment to ethical conduct, education, social responsibility and human dignity. ## Knowledge and Intellectual Enquiry Across centuries, the Ismaili intellectual heritage has valued learning, reasoning and dialogue. From the scholarly institutions of the Fatimid era to modern educational initiatives, the pursuit of knowledge has remained central to cultural and community life. Mawlana Shah Rahim graduated from Brown University in 1995 with a degree in comparative literature. His extensive involvement in institutions associated with the Imamat illustrates the continuing importance of education, professional development and the empowerment of communities. ## Humanitarian Service and Sustainable Development The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) works across education, healthcare, culture, economic opportunity and quality of life. Before becoming Imam, Mawlana Shah Rahim took part in its activities, with particular attention to environmental protection, climate-related challenges and sustainable development. These priorities underscore a broad understanding of development: meaningful progress concerns not only economic outcomes but also inclusion, social well-being, environmental stewardship and access to opportunity. ## A Message to Younger Generations This birthday anniversary provides a moment for younger generations to reflect on the value of study, cultural preservation, voluntary service and civic engagement. Intellectual curiosity, mutual respect and a commitment to pluralism are essential foundations for peaceful coexistence and long-term progress. ## A Message from HSKRC The Hassan Sabbah Knowledge & Research Centre (HSKRC) warmly extends its respectful congratulations on the 55th birthday of Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini. Through its commitment to preserving Ismaili intellectual and cultural heritage, facilitating historical research and expanding access to reliable sources, HSKRC joins in recognising the enduring significance of knowledge, compassion and service to humanity. We extend our best wishes for Mawlana Shah Rahim's continued health, well-being and long life, and for the flourishing of Ismaili communities and the wider human family. **Warm wishes on the 55th birthday of Mawlana Shah Rahim al-Hussaini.** *Hassan Sabbah Knowledge & Research Centre — hskrc.org* ## References - The Ismaili — https://the.ismaili/ - Institute of Ismaili Studies — https://www.iis.ac.uk/ - Aga Khan Development Network — https://www.akdn.org/ **Submitted photo credit:** the.ismaili.
